Post October Crisis
Since violence was no longer the answer, the only other option was by using the ballot box. (Political)
1974: Bill 22 Passes - French is declared the official language of Quebec, contrary to federal policy of Bilingualism.
1976: The Parti Quebecois is elected. (PQ)
1977: Bill 101 passes - French declared the only language of government, business, education & communications; Bilingual signs and menus had to be changed.
The Question: Seperation
1980: A question is posed to the people of Quebec - Should Quebec negotiate for Sovereign-Association?
Trudeau promised to reform the constitution if Quebec voted NO.
20 May, 1980: the NO side won with 59.9% of the vote.
René Lévesque responds with hope: "If I have understood you clearly, you are telling us, 'until the next time.'"
